Alex Gibney Scientology Doc Gets International Sales Agent

Content Media has acquired international sales rights to Oscar-winner Alex Gibney’s Scientology documentary Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief.

The doc, which will have its world premiere at this month’s Sundance Film Festival, is based on the book by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Lawrence Wright, and sees The Armstrong Lie-director profile eight former Scientology members, highlighting the organization's roots and rise to popularity in Hollywood and beyond....

Among those former followers providing details is filmmaker Paul Haggis, whose 2011 profile in the New Yorker by Wright helped lay the foundations for his controversial book, which was exclusively excerpted in The Hollywood Reporter.

Content describes Going Clear as “a provocative tale of ego, exploitation and lust for power,” in which those interviewed “describe the systematic history of abuse and betrayal by Church officials. including the current leadership.”

HBO already has U.S. TV rights to the documentary, and is reportedly eyeing an air date of March 16.

Scientology Full Page Ad - NYT - LAT - HBO Documentary

LOS ANGELES — If controversy sells, HBO may suddenly have a hit in Alex Gibney’s new documentary about Scientology and renegades who left it behind.

On Friday, the Church of Scientology took aim at the movie — which its members and leaders have not yet seen — with full-page newspaper advertisements in The New York Times and elsewhere detailing what it says are journalistic lapses by Mr. Gibney.

In a pointed reference to a much-challenged magazine article about a campus rape at the University of Virginia, the ads ask whether the movie, called “Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief,” is “a Rolling Stone/UVA Redux.” The film is based on a book written by Lawrence Wright, who is a producer of the documentary.

New York Times Runs Scientology Ad Targeting Upcoming HBO Documentary

The Church of Scientology took to the New York Times to publicly denounce director Alex Gibney’s upcoming HBO documentary, Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief, on Friday. In a full-page advertisement, the Church makes claims that the doc, based on the book Going Clear by Lawrence Wright, is grounded in false information.

Scientology vs. HBO May Also Be the End of Tom Cruise at Warner Bros.
■Celebrity■Movies
by Roger Friedman - January 17, 2015

The war between the cult of Scientology and HBO could have a domino effect in other places. Yesterday, Scientology took out a full page ad in the New York Times decrying HBO for its upcoming documentary “Going Clear.” Based on Lawrence Wright’s much praised book of the same name, “Going Clear” is directed by Alex Gibney. The book rips open the cult’s secrets along with many stories about Scientology’s Hollywood members including Tom Cruise and John Travolta.

When “Going Clear” is finally seen, we’ll see just how much of it takes in Hollywood. That may put HBO’s parent company, Time Warner, in some trouble. HBO’s cousins are Warner Bros, movie studio and CNN. Also still in the family, although at arms’ reach, are the Time Inc magazines including People and Entertainment Weekly.

Will Cruise make another movie at Warner’s, or ever do publicity again with People or EW? What about Travolta and some of the others who are identified with Scientology like Kirstie Alley, Juliette Lewis, Jenna Elfman, and so on? Cruise’s biggest film other than a franchise in 10 years was “Edge of Tomorrow,” at Warner’s last year. His next three announced projects are at Paramount, but you never know when a script will come along that Cruise wants– and it’s at HBO.

And what of Travolta? He’s moving into TV with “American Crime Story” on F/X. An HBO series for a fading film star is not out of the question. But it may be for HBO if Travolta’s Scientology travails are revealed.

PS I don’t see Gibney pulling punches. His Lance Armstrong and Wikileaks docs were exemplary in how they went for the good stuff. If I were the people in “Going Clear,” I’d be nervous.
